about
What inspired the song?
The song is really about meeting my partner at a basement show they booked and played with their old band Bridal. Everyone was partying a ton and it was way hectic and they were wearing lots of hats that night: running doors, playing a set, organizing and doing security, etc. They (Jennelle) gave me 2 pins from their band and I put them both on my jacket. They don’t even remember meeting me that night and we’re married now!
Overall the lyrics they (Jennelle) wrote are kind of about fate and irony. And the instrumental is me trying to write an alt-metal/nu-metal song because they love that kind of music.
Who produced it? What was the recording experience like?
Sam Gates produced and mixed and mastered everything after we recorded it with Chance Coon (of the Annex Studio in Caldwell, ID). Recording was great and super easy because we were living just down the road from Chance at the time with our friend Mike Menendez (formerly the famous mail guy of the awesome label Hidden Home Records).
We got everything recorded in one night (save for some extra vocal overdubs) and we had Sam Gates mix, master and provide production polish on it after. I’m used to making basement tapes for punk bands so it sounds really big and the fidelity on it still blows me away!
What do you want people to take away from the song?
Enjoy it! It’s not very didactic. Mostly just us talking about our own very bad memories (haha)!
Was there a particular mood you were trying to capture? A story you were trying to tell?
Oh yeah, I want it to feel mysterious and cosmic. The story is definitely one of forgetfulness and also sentiment and memory.
lyrics
A basement, a floor.
Hazy, the details are escaping.
A face and noise,
I think some conversation took place.
There's something I can't put my finger on...
I'm forgetting something important.
A cosmic alignment.
I thought astrology was bullshit.
But there you are
my rhinestone cowboy dream.
There's something I can't put my finger on...
I'm forgetting something important.
Where do I know you from?
(Memory is string:
The ends pulled tighter
around your forefinger
drawing blood like wire.
Place your trust in weaving
coupling the tangles)
Was it the night that I was drunk?
I remember now.
